Wired for Intimacy
This is my top choice for reading on the topic of pornography. William Struthers gives incredible insight into the workings of the brain and how it responds to pornography. You must read this book. William will actually be featuring in our Guilty Pleasure documentary and will be talking through some of these principles with us at the Grand Canyon.
This book looks at the works of Alfred Kinsey who supposedly freed America’s repressed libido. It looks at some of the reasons why sexuality has been distorted so badly in the last 70 years. The author, Dr Judith Reisman, has done a lot of research on pornography and its effects on human behavior.
This book can be reasonably descriptive so it’s not for the fainthearted. It’s written by Gail Dines who has appeared on Australia’s Q&A TV show on SBS. Pornland looks at how our porn culture affects the way women and girls think about their bodies, their sexuality and their relationships. Also it examines the way porn shapes and limits sexual imaginations and behaviors.
The Social Cost of Pornograpy
This is a must read. It is a summary of a consultation held in Princeton, New Jersey, in December 2008, sponsored by the Witherspoon Institute and cosponsored by the Institute for the Psychological Sciences. It looks at the fact that recent research is suggesting that pornography is harming people, posing public health challenges, effecting personal and family well-being.
Author Michael Leahy tells his story of destruction due to pornography. He lost his family due to his addiction and now tours America talking to college students about the dangers of porn.
In this book author Pamela Paul has performed more than 100 interviews of people who’ve been affected by porn. She argues that as porn becomes more pervasive, it is destroying our marriages and families as well as distorting our children’s ideas of sex and sexuality. This book can be fairly descriptive in some of it’s explanations.
The Brain that Changes Itself
This is an interesting read on the way that the brain can reprogram itself to do the most amazing tasks. It is both inspirational and educational at the same time. It’s written by a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst called Norman Doidge, M.D.
The Sexual Man
This book is written by Dr. Archibald Hart. It helps to break some of the myths that surround male sexuality and provides a biblical perspective on what men really think about sex. It promote a healthy, fulfilled and guilt free sex life. Worth the read.
Truth Behind the Fantasy of Porn
This book is written by Shelley Lubben who was a porn star in the 90’s. It provides incredible insight into what goes on behind the camera and the way the pornography affects the lives of porn stars. You will not be able to put this book down.
I’ve only just started reading this book. It’s an interesting viewpoint on how the internet is changing our lives. It has some very interesting observations that really get you thinking. Even if you don’t agree with everything it certainly helps you to sit up and take notice.
So there’s my list for the moment. I hope that you find it helpful in your quest to educate yourself a little more.
