Pastor, Dr Allan Meyer answers the question “How can churches help those struggling with porn?”
One of the challenges of helping someone who have been struggling with porn is that any sexual issue can involve tremendous levels of shame. This makes it difficult for people to be open, honest and transparent or even to say “I need help!”
Because we know the importance of sexual purity and have clear morals about sexual behaviour, it can make the church a difficult place to tell the truth.
One of the most important things that the church has to be prepared to do is to create an environment where it is possible for people to deal with the real issues in their lives and not pretend that things are going better than they are.
So the church can start to deal with this issue by:
- facing it honestly
- avoid shaming people into pretending that they are doing better then they are
- create an atmosphere of honesty and transparency
- make information and support available
Remember, God loves people when they are struggling and when they are not. Create an environment where it is ok to tell the truth, and then begin a journey that can lead to something better.
